Former civil servant denies fraud over undeclared overlapping jobs
Kashim Chowdhury told Southwark Crown Court he failed to disclose overlapping civil service jobs because he was experiencing stress and a recurrence of PTSD, but denied intending to defraud anyone. He accepts giving inaccurate information on employment forms, while disputing former managers’ criticisms of his work.
The prosecution alleges Chowdhury held eight positions between February 2020 and September 2023, earning £349,378 in total, and at one point had five full-time jobs requiring 183 hours of work a week. The court has also heard that he received more than £11,000 in take-home pay from five employers in April 2023 and nearly £8,746 in May. He said some colleagues knew about his other roles; the trial also considered missing phones and memory sticks containing work and personal records.
