Catherine Breed completes 900-mile swim along California coast in 111 days

Daily Mail ·

Catherine Breed has become the first person to swim the full length of California’s coast, completing the 900-mile journey in 111 days. Her comments about polluted water near the Mexican border have drawn attention to ocean pollution and her campaign for conservation, which she says matters more than fear of sharks.

The 33-year-old began at the California-Oregon border on 1 July and finished at Imperial Beach, averaging about 10 miles a day. She swam for up to six hours daily, facing cold water, strong currents and waves as high as seven feet, with a support team of seven aboard a vessel. The expedition cost about $500,000 and was funded by individual donors and corporate sponsors; Breed also aimed to encourage women and girls to pursue challenging goals.
