‘Playing for their careers’ – Australia reeling after extraordinary day

BBC Sport ·

Australia’s batting collapse has left them facing defeat in the second Test against South Africa, despite leading the series 1-0. After dismissing South Africa for 425, Australia were bowled out for 99 and then reached 156-4, still 170 runs behind with one day remaining.

South Africa had been 110-6 on day three, but Temba Bavuma’s 179 and Marco Jansen’s 85 helped them build a 326-run first-innings lead; Scott Boland took 5-81. Travis Head was unbeaten on 87 in Australia’s second innings, while Kagiso Rabada had taken 2-30. The failures have also put several Australian places under scrutiny, including Marnus Labuschagne, who has gone 47 Test innings without a century, and Beau Webster, who has gone seven innings without a half-century.

  • Australia trail South Africa by 170 runs with one day left.
  • South Africa recovered from 110-6 to make 425.
