It’s virtue-signalling gone mad – Sinn Fein, the Social Democrats and the Labour Party all back legal change to allow stillborn babies be classified as ‘non-binary’
Ireland’s Government defeated a bill that would have allowed an ‘X’ marker in civil registration for non-binary and intersex people. The proposal was backed by Sinn Féin, the Social Democrats, Labour and some Independents; the Government said the changes to birth, stillbirth and death records were too far-reaching and insufficiently developed.
The bill, introduced by People Before Profit-Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger, lost by 87 votes to 63. Supporters said legal recognition could reduce discrimination and improve access to healthcare and official documents. Minister Dara Calleary raised concerns about how existing medical records could be amended, the quality of demographic data and the cost of implementing the changes; current gender recognition certificates are available from age 16.
