Premature twins face severe malnutrition after fleeing Yemen fighting

BBC World ·

Newborn twins Raghad and Raad were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition after their family fled fighting in Yemen and walked for three days to reach a hospital in Aden. Their struggle shows how renewed conflict is worsening hunger and obstructing access to care for displaced families.

The twins were born prematurely seven weeks ago, and their parents say rising prices left them unable to afford enough baby milk. The UN says more than 250,000 people have been displaced in the past three months and around 800,000 can no longer receive lifesaving aid; Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, has been cut off and faces food shortages.

In short

  • Premature twins reached hospital severely malnourished after fleeing fighting.
  • Their family walked for three days to Aden.
  • The UN reports over 250,000 newly displaced and 800,000 without lifesaving aid.
