Phoebe Bridgers and Sombr producer, Tony Berg, launches new JV label with Warner Records
Warner Records has formed a joint venture label, Crime & Punishment Records, with producer and A&R executive Tony Berg. The label aims to develop new artists and has signed singer-songwriter Elle Bramhall as its first act.
Berg said he wants to champion ambitious young artists and sees renewed interest in lyrics, harmony and musical curiosity. His career spans more than five decades; recent work includes co-producing SOMBR’s 2025 debut album, while Warner chief Aaron Bay-Schuck cited Berg’s role in helping SOMBR realise his vision. The deal follows Warner’s July partnership with Sickamore’s three times LOUDER.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A joint venture with an experienced producer and A&R executive could give emerging artists access to industry expertise, resources and a platform to develop distinctive work. Warner can also argue that partnerships like this help it find new audiences and support music built around songwriting and artistic curiosity.
The case against
A major-label partnership may concentrate influence over which new artists receive investment and visibility, while tying their development to commercial priorities. Critics could also question whether a new imprint meaningfully expands artists’ independence or mainly extends Warner’s reach through another label brand.
