Canva’s new image model plans layouts before generating pictures
Canva has launched Canva Craft, its first in-house image generation model, which plans a design before producing an image. The company says this two-stage approach improves precision, consistency and control, particularly for images that need readable text or carefully placed objects.
Craft can generate images at up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios, for uses including marketing, social media, realistic scenes and digital art. Canva says it trained the model on millions of human-made templates; it ranks fourth on Design Arena’s image-generation leaderboard and is available globally through Dream Lab. The company also plans support for AI agents through the Model Context Protocol and faster versions of the model.
In short
- Canva Craft plans designs before generating images.
- It supports up to 2K resolution and over 30 aspect ratios.
- The model is available globally through Canva’s Dream Lab.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Canva’s purpose-built model could make image generation more useful for practical design by planning composition before rendering, especially when text must be readable or objects placed precisely. Training on human-made templates and offering varied formats may help users produce polished work with less manual adjustment, while in-house development could give Canva greater control over improvements and integration.
The case against
A model trained on millions of human-made templates raises questions about whether creators’ work was used with adequate consent, credit or compensation, and whether generated designs could compete with theirs. Claims of greater precision and control, along with a leaderboard ranking, do not by themselves establish how the tool performs across real tasks or whether its outputs are reliable enough for professional use.
Explained simply
Canva is an online design platform used to make things such as posters, presentations and social media graphics. Its Dream Lab feature lets people create images from written descriptions, a type of technology often called image generation.
Images for designs may need to fit a particular shape or include text and objects in specific places. Canva says its new model, Craft, uses templates made by people to plan a layout before creating the image, aiming to give users more control over those details.
