Consequence ·

John Mayer has launched Sob Rock Records in partnership with Mercury Records and released “Tom and Jerry”, his first new solo track since 2021’s *Sob Rock*. The move marks a new label venture for the singer-songwriter, whose single has an ’80s-inspired sound and retains his characteristic soft, dreamy ballad style.

Mayer produced the track with Blake Slatkin; Serban Ghenea mixed it, and it was recorded at Chaplin Studios. It debuted on Mayer’s SiriusXM channel before reaching streaming platforms. He is also preparing for a Sphere residency in Las Vegas in 2027, expanded from six shows to 21 dates between April and June, with solo, full-band and John Mayer Trio sets.

Explained simply

John Mayer is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for mixing pop, rock and blues. His 2021 album, Sob Rock, drew on the polished sounds of 1980s pop and rock. The new release is his first solo track since that album.

Sob Rock Records is a new label venture Mayer has launched with Mercury Records, a record company that releases music by artists. The partnership gives context to the release: Mayer is putting out new music while establishing a label of his own. His planned Las Vegas Sphere residency is a separate live project, with shows scheduled across several months in 2027.
