Burnham downplays adding alcohol to emergency food kits after Rayner’s ‘sauvignon blanc’ quip

The Independent ·

Andy Burnham advised the public not to prioritise alcohol in emergency supply kits, saying people need a clear head during a crisis. His comments came as the government launched a campaign asking households to prepare for disruptions, following Angela Rayner’s joke that she would pack sauvignon blanc and mascara.

The “Be Ready” campaign recommends keeping three days of essential supplies, including bottled water and non-perishable food. Officials also highlighted first-aid kits, hand sanitiser, pet food and baby food, amid concerns that severe weather, cyberattacks or hostile actors could disrupt services and supply chains.
