SparkyOS brings a full Arch-based desktop to a USB drive

The Register ·

SparkyOS is a new Arch-based system from the team behind SparkyLinux, designed to run as a complete desktop from a USB drive without installing anything on the computer’s internal disk. It offers a portable option for people who want a usable, general-purpose Linux system rather than a read-only live demo or a specialised rescue tool.

The first release, version 2026.10, includes the Xfce desktop and a selection of applications. Its image is 10 GB, compressed to 3.2 GB for download, and the article says it was tested on a 64 GB USB drive. SparkyOS requires a UEFI computer, does not support legacy BIOS, and cannot be used with multiboot tools such as Ventoy; documentation explains how to expand its filesystem and adapt it for use in a virtual machine.

In short

  • SparkyOS runs a full Arch desktop from a USB drive.
  • It is designed to leave the computer’s internal disk untouched.
  • The 10 GB image requires UEFI and does not support Ventoy.
