Future? No Thanks! dev removes AI-generated voices from game and offers refunds to players who feel “betrayed”
Developer Paolo “Molleindustria” Pedercini has removed two AI-generated character voices from his game *Future? No Thanks!* after disclosing their use prompted angry reactions online. He is offering refunds through PayPal or Venmo to players who feel “betrayed”, while acknowledging that he believes the game is slightly worse without the voices.
The removed text-to-speech lines belonged to an automated toilet and a hair-salon translator, which Pedercini had intended as a spoof of generative AI. The update also increases earnings from some in-game gigs to reduce the risk of players being unable to complete quests. Pedercini says Steam does not require disclosure of AI used for coding assistance, and says his next game will be “completely hand-coded”.
In short
- Two AI-generated voices have been removed from *Future? No Thanks!*.
- Pedercini is offering refunds to players who feel betrayed.
- The update also makes some in-game gigs more rewarding.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Removing the voices and offering refunds respects players who feel they should have been told about AI-generated content before buying the game. Even if the voices were intended as satire, disclosure lets players make informed choices and helps maintain trust between developers and their audience.
The case against
The voices were limited to minor characters and were intended to parody generative AI, so removing them may weaken the game’s creative intent in response to online pressure. Players who regard the change as making the game worse may reasonably prefer that the developer keep the original version available, while refunds offer a remedy to those who feel misled.
