Explained simply

The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy world created by British author J.R.R. Tolkien, best known for his novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Rings of Power is a television series set thousands of years before those books, in an age when powerful rings are made and the dark lord Sauron rises.

The series follows characters including the elf Galadriel and the human smith Celebrimbor, alongside new characters created for television. Amazon’s Prime Video distributes the show, which is part of a long-running franchise that also includes films, books and games. Fans and newcomers may encounter different versions of Tolkien’s world across these works.
