Britain must be ready for war in 1,000 days, Wes Streeting warns

The Independent ·

Wes Streeting has warned that Britain must be prepared for war within just over 1,000 days, saying adversaries could have the capacity to attack the UK by 2030. He argues that preparing for possible aggression, including from Russia, is necessary to deter it and protect the country alongside its allies.

The warning comes as the government urges households to prepare for emergencies that could disrupt essential services, including severe weather or cyber attacks. People are advised to keep nine litres of bottled water and three days’ worth of food, as well as blankets, cash, a first-aid kit, a torch and a wind-up radio. MI5 chief Ken McCallum has also warned that threats to infrastructure could affect banking, flights and hospital care, and said the risks are expected to persist.
