Fernandes dropped to Man Utd bench – was Carrick right?

BBC Sport ·

Bruno Fernandes was left on the bench and did not play as Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, extending their winless run in all competitions to eight matches. The decision followed Fernandes’ criticism of manager Michael Carrick after United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como, raising questions about whether the omission was tactical or a response to his comments.

Carrick described the selection as “a football decision”, while Harry Maguire captained the side and Mason Mount took a playmaking role. It was only the sixth time Fernandes had been left out of a Premier League starting line-up; United had won one of their previous 10 league games without him starting. Former striker Clinton Morrison said Carrick should have brought Fernandes on at half-time, while Carrick’s programme notes called for the squad to improve and represent the club’s standards.

In short

  • Fernandes was an unused substitute in United’s 3-0 home defeat.
  • Carrick called his omission a football decision.
  • United’s winless run reached eight matches.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Carrick may have judged that a struggling side needed a different balance and wanted to give Mount a chance in the playmaking role. Selection is a manager’s responsibility, and leaving out even a key player can be a legitimate tactical choice; Carrick’s explanation and the team’s poor run do not by themselves show that Fernandes was punished for speaking out.

The case against

Fernandes is a central creative player, and United’s limited record when he does not start gives reason to question whether omitting him weakened the team. With United trailing at half-time and eventually losing 3-0, Carrick could have brought him on to try to change the match; the timing after Fernandes’ criticism also makes the decision’s rationale harder to take at face value.

Explained simply

Bruno Fernandes is Manchester United’s captain and a central midfielder who often creates chances and helps organise the team’s attacks. Michael Carrick is the manager, responsible for choosing the team and deciding how it plays. Harry Maguire and Mason Mount are among the other senior players in the squad.

A manager may leave out a key player for tactical reasons, such as changing the team’s shape or managing a player’s fitness. But when the player has recently criticised the manager, the choice can also prompt questions about whether the criticism played a part. Fernandes has rarely been left out of United’s league starting side, so his role is a focus for debate.
