Two killed and two injured after car hits Halloween ride cyclists in California

Daily Mail ·

A driver allegedly struck a group of about 30 cyclists on a Halloween-themed ride in Montclair, California, late on Saturday, killing two people and injuring two others. The 38-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

A 25-year-old man died at the scene, while a 30-year-old woman died in hospital shortly after 1am on Sunday. One other cyclist was hospitalised with major injuries and was stable; a fourth had a head laceration and declined further treatment. The ride was self-organised and was not affiliated with the city. Witnesses reportedly claimed a victim was dragged for more than a mile, but police did not mention this and the account has not been independently verified.

In short

  • Two cyclists were killed in the Montclair crash.
  • Two others were injured.
  • The suspect was arrested on suspicion of several charges.

Explained simply

Montclair is a city in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles. Halloween-themed group rides bring cyclists together in costume, and some are organised informally rather than by local authorities.

When a vehicle hits cyclists, investigators examine how the collision happened and whether the driver was impaired or left the scene. In California, suspected drink-driving can lead to criminal charges, with the precise charges depending on the evidence and the circumstances of any deaths or injuries.
