Most Windows users are seriously underusing this powerful desktop feature

Engadget ·

Windows virtual desktops let users divide open apps and windows into separate workspaces, which can help with organisation and focus. The feature is available in Windows 10 and 11, and can give people using a single monitor more usable screen space.

Users can create a desktop with Windows + Ctrl + D, switch between desktops with Windows + Ctrl + the left or right arrow, and close one with Windows + Ctrl + F4. In Task View, they can rename desktops, move windows between them and, on Windows 11, assign different wallpapers. Settings control whether the taskbar and Alt + Tab show windows from every desktop or only the current one; a free GitHub tool adds desktop labels and custom navigation shortcuts.

In short

  • Virtual desktops organise apps into separate workspaces.
  • Windows 10 and 11 include the feature.
  • Task View and keyboard shortcuts manage desktops.
