Antonelli delivers ‘the race of a champion who isn’t the champion yet’

BBC Sport ·

Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix with a dominant drive that brought him to the brink of the Formula 1 world title. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff called it the best race of Antonelli’s career so far, praising his execution and saying he had outperformed the car.

Antonelli needs just two points in Mexico City next weekend to secure the championship. George Russell or Lewis Hamilton could still delay the title by winning, but Antonelli would clinch it with ninth place, or 10th if Hamilton wins. His Austin victory came as Russell finished eighth, and followed a strong weekend for Mercedes’ upgraded car after the team had struggled to understand the package.

In short

  • Antonelli dominated in Austin and moved close to the title.
  • Two points in Mexico will secure the championship.
  • Wolff praised his execution and calm approach.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Antonelli’s win was a defining performance: he controlled the race, delivered under pressure and moved within reach of the title. Wolff’s praise reflects the view that Antonelli made the most of the car and showed the composure and consistency expected of a champion.

The case against

The victory came during a weekend when Mercedes’ upgraded car was performing strongly, so it may be premature to treat the result as proof that Antonelli outperformed his machinery or has already established championship-level superiority. With the title not yet secured and rivals still able to delay it, a measured assessment would distinguish an excellent race from a settled judgement about his standing.

Explained simply

Formula 1 is a season-long series in which drivers score points at each Grand Prix, with the driver who earns the most becoming world champion. Kimi Antonelli drives for Mercedes, alongside George Russell; Lewis Hamilton is a former Mercedes driver and another contender in the title fight.

Mercedes is a leading team, but a fast car does not guarantee a win: drivers must manage the race and make the most of the car they have. The team had struggled to understand recent upgrades, so its improved performance in Austin matters both for Antonelli’s title challenge and for Mercedes’ prospects in the remaining races.
