Los Angeles, New York and Detroit rank lowest for quality of life

Daily Mail ·

Los Angeles, New York City and Detroit ranked lowest for quality of life among 73 North American cities in Numbeo’s current index. The comparison draws on crowd-sourced data and user surveys, assessing conditions such as safety, living costs and pollution.

The index uses eight measures, including health care, purchasing power, traffic and climate. Los Angeles ranked worst overall and had the poorest pollution and commute scores; New York was last for property prices relative to incomes and near the bottom for living costs and purchasing power. Detroit ranked lowest for safety and second-lowest for pollution. Ottawa, Raleigh and Austin topped the list, while Miami, Las Vegas and Phoenix also placed in the bottom ten.

In short

  • Los Angeles ranked lowest overall.
  • New York had the worst property price to income ratio.
  • Detroit ranked lowest for safety.

Explained simply

Quality-of-life rankings try to compare everyday conditions across places, but their results depend on which factors are measured and how they are weighted. Numbeo’s index combines eight measures, including safety, health care, living costs, traffic and climate, using information submitted by users and survey responses.

The cities are being compared with 70 others in North America. The figures can offer a broad snapshot, but crowd-sourced data may reflect who chooses to contribute and how people experience their own city; the ranking is not a complete measure of life for every resident.
