Steam Frame kernel updated with external CD-ROM drive compatibility just one day after a user asked Valve for it

Rock Paper Shotgun ·

A Valve employee updated the Steam Frame’s Linux kernel to enable external CD-ROM support, following a user request the previous day. The change could let owners use disc drives to install older games or watch films, and shows how quickly user feedback can lead to a software change.

The requester, Aiodensghost, said the headset could not read discs because it lacked the necessary drivers, preventing them from installing the 2006 game Need for Speed Carbon. Valve employee gaberowe replied that the issue would be investigated; about ten minutes later, a kernel commit enabled CD-ROM support. Users can potentially install the updated kernel themselves, though the support is expected to arrive in a future software update.

In short

  • Valve enabled external CD-ROM support in the Steam Frame kernel.
  • The change followed a user request by about a day.
  • Support may arrive in a future software update.
