PS5 update adds party chat indicators to identify speakers on screen

Engadget ·

Sony’s 16 September 2026 PS5 system update officially added an on-screen indicator showing which player is speaking in party voice chat. It should make conversations in busy parties easier to follow, and works on both PS5 and PS5 Pro.

The feature is off by default: while in a party, open Control Centre, select the Voice Chat card, then More and “Display Who’s Speaking”, and turn on “Display Names”. You can choose its screen position; parties can have up to 16 players, and individual player volume can be adjusted from the Voice Chat card. Some players had reported seeing the feature before its official release, but it does not work with in-game voice chat, and offers no size or transparency controls.

In short

  • PS5 now shows who is speaking in party chat.
  • The indicator works on PS5 and PS5 Pro.
  • It must be enabled and can be repositioned.

Explained simply

PS5 is Sony’s home video game console, and players can use party voice chat to talk with friends while playing different games. A party can include up to 16 people, so it can be difficult to tell who is speaking when several voices overlap.

Sony makes system updates that add or change features across the console. The on-screen speaker indicator is for party chat, rather than voice chat built into an individual game, and is available on PS5 and PS5 Pro.
