Inside Buckshot Roulette developer Mike Klubnika’s terrifically nasty horror universe of post-Soviet malaise
Mike Klubnika has built a distinctive horror style across Buckshot Roulette, S.p.l.i.t and Machine Party: grimy low-poly worlds, club music, smoking and sudden threats, set against a bleak, authoritarian future. Their short, intense format and unsettling tone have proved commercially successful, showing how an independent developer’s personal aesthetic can reach a large audience.
The 24-year-old Estonian developer says he aims to evoke isolation, desperation, risk and worry. Before Buckshot Roulette took off, he self-published 19 small games, with five later collected in Unsorted Horror; he left university after one term as the game gained momentum. His three recent titles have sold 10 million, 200,000 and 1.5 million copies respectively.
