TikTok launches restaurant discovery guide in three US regions

The Verge ·

TikTok has launched Must Eat, an in-app restaurant guide that draws on dining videos, reviews and comments to help users discover local businesses. The move puts TikTok in competition with services such as Yelp and Google Maps, while extending the platform’s role in turning viral food content into visits to restaurants.

The guide is built from 40 million TikTok posts, reviews and comments and is initially available in New York City, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Users can browse “everyday eats” or “elevated dining”, filter by factors such as rating and distance, view related videos, save venues, leave reviews and make calls or reservations; TikTok says restaurants cannot pay to be featured. The company also says 27 million US diners visited a restaurant, cafe or shop for the first time because of TikTok last year.

In short

  • TikTok’s Must Eat guide uses 40 million posts, reviews and comments.
