TikTok Wants to Help Its Users Find Their Next Must Eat
TikTok’s US business has launched Must Eat, a food discovery product designed to connect users with restaurants featured by food creators. The launch builds on the way TikTok trends can lead people to try places in real life, and gives the company another way to support creators and local businesses.
Must Eat is starting in New York, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, with listings grouped into “Everyday Eats” and “Elevated Dining”. TikTok says more than 27 million Americans visited an independent restaurant, cafe or shop they had first discovered on the platform last year. OpenTable is helping users book tables at selected restaurants, and the product expands on TikTok’s travel-focused “Must GO”.
In short
- TikTok has launched a restaurant discovery product called Must Eat.
- It is available in New York, Los Angeles and the Bay Area.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Must Eat could make restaurant discovery more useful by turning food creators’ recommendations into a practical route to local businesses and bookings. If it brings new customers to independent venues and helps creators earn from their work, it could support neighbourhood businesses while giving users a convenient way to find places they might otherwise miss.
The case against
Making TikTok a more direct guide to where people eat could give the platform greater influence over restaurants’ visibility, with attention potentially favouring places that perform well in creator content rather than those best suited to a diner’s needs. Users and businesses may also reasonably question how listings are selected, whether recommendations are sufficiently transparent, and how much reliance on a commercial platform is desirable for local discovery.
Explained simply
TikTok is a video-sharing platform where food creators post clips about restaurants and dishes. Videos can spread widely, drawing attention to places and sometimes prompting viewers to visit them.
Restaurants may benefit from that attention, while creators can help people discover local businesses. TikTok has also introduced travel-related recommendations through Must GO. Linking food videos with restaurant information and bookings extends the company’s role in helping users plan visits.
