60 Years Later, Star Trek Officially Brings Back an Iconic Character for a New Release
Magic: The Gathering is adding an official Star Trek set, marking the franchise’s 60th anniversary with cards based on its people, civilisations and technology. An exclusive preview includes Sarek, Spock’s father and a prominent Federation diplomat, alongside eight other cards.
Sarek rewards players for having a varied crew: at the start of combat, the card draws one card for every five creature types among non-Borg creatures. Drawing three or more cards this way adds two +1/+1 counters to every creature. The set launches on 13 November, and Sarek has two art versions with the same abilities.

Explained simply
Magic: The Gathering is a trading card game in which players build decks of characters and other cards, then use them against one another. Its official Star Trek set brings the science-fiction franchise’s people, civilisations and technology into the game.
Sarek is a Vulcan diplomat in Star Trek and the father of Spock, one of the franchise’s best-known characters. The Federation, of which Sarek is a prominent representative, is an alliance of worlds in the series.
The card game’s creatures have types that can affect how they work together. Sarek’s ability links a varied group of non-Borg creatures to drawing cards and, if enough are drawn, strengthening the player’s creatures.
