Ars Technica ·

Sony has released a trailer for *Jumanji: Open World*, the third film in the rebooted adventure series, which is due in cinemas on Christmas Day 2026. The story brings the game’s avatars and creatures into the real world, echoing the 1995 original, and promises another round of body-swapping comedy.

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan return alongside much of the previous cast. The trailer shows Spencer’s mother inhabiting Bravestone’s avatar and Spencer taking on Ruby Roundhouse, while other characters are paired with different avatars. The 2017 film earned more than $960 million worldwide, and its 2019 sequel set up the new instalment.

In short

  • Jumanji’s game escapes into the real world.
  • The third film arrives on 25 December 2026.
  • Returning characters face more avatar swaps.

Explained simply

Jumanji began as a story about a dangerous game whose creatures and challenges spill into everyday life. The 1995 film starred Robin Williams; later films restarted the story with a video game that draws players into a jungle world, where they take on characters with unusual abilities.

The newer films follow a group of friends, including Spencer, as they play the game through chosen avatars. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan play some of those avatars, while the players’ personalities and bodies can be mismatched for comic effect. The series has reached a large international audience, with the 2017 film earning more than $960 million worldwide.
