Explained simply
Dune is a science-fiction story created by author Frank Herbert, set in a distant future where powerful families compete for control of planets and resources. Its central character, Paul Atreides, is heir to a noble family sent to govern the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of a substance vital to space travel.
Canadian director Denis Villeneuve adapted Herbert’s novel in two films, following Paul’s struggle to survive and the growing conflict over Arrakis. The next film is based on Dune Messiah, Herbert’s sequel, which continues Paul’s story after the events of the first book.
The series combines political rivalry, religion and control of natural resources, with large-scale battles and futuristic settings. Its cinema releases have also made IMAX screenings part of how many viewers experience the films.
