Exclusive: Create Music Group now owns a minority stake in DistroKid
Create Music Group has taken a minority stake in music distributor DistroKid, joining CVC Capital Partners, which acquired a majority stake in a deal completed in the third quarter. Create says it will work with CVC to support DistroKid’s growth, bringing together a company that owns established independent labels and artists with a distributor used by many artists starting out.
Create’s investment was made earlier this year, alongside CVC’s transaction; its terms have not been disclosed. DistroKid’s existing investor Insight Partners retains a “significant minority stake”, and President Phil Bauer remains in charge. DistroKid says it distributes about 40% of new music worldwide. It is also facing a lawsuit from Universal Music Group, which alleges deceptive trade practices and copyright infringement; DistroKid’s response deadline is 4 December.
In short
- Create Music Group has taken a minority stake in DistroKid.
- CVC owns the majority stake; Insight Partners retains a significant minority holding.
- DistroKid says it distributes about 40% of new music worldwide.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Create Music Group’s investment could bring DistroKid capital and expertise in working with established independent labels and artists, helping the distributor expand while keeping its existing leadership in place. Supporters may see the partnership as a way to strengthen services for independent musicians and sustain a platform that handles a large share of new releases.
The case against
Critics may worry that bringing in major financial and music-industry investors could shift DistroKid’s priorities away from the needs of independent artists, particularly if growth and returns take precedence over affordability or artist control. The ownership change may also invite closer scrutiny of how the distributor handles its business, given Universal Music Group’s unresolved allegations; those remain claims, not established findings.
Explained simply
DistroKid is a digital music distributor: it helps artists send recordings to streaming services and online shops. Many musicians use it to release music independently, without signing to a record label.
Create Music Group owns independent record labels and works with artists, while CVC Capital Partners is an investment firm that buys stakes in companies. Insight Partners is another investor in DistroKid, and Phil Bauer is its president. The ownership changes bring together investors and businesses with different roles in the music industry.
DistroKid says it distributes about 40% of new music worldwide, so its ownership is relevant to many artists releasing music. The company is also involved in a legal dispute with Universal Music Group, one of the world’s major record companies.
