James Gunn has said he does not know whether Margot Robbie wants to return as Harley Quinn in the DC Universe, and may cast someone else if she does not. He said he would work to make Robbie’s return fit if she is interested, while noting that Harley is difficult to carry into the new continuity.

On his podcast, Gunn explained that Harley’s relationship with the Joker is specific, while the Joker has not yet been established in the DCU; Batman has appeared in the animated series Creature Commandos. Gunn praised Robbie, whom he directed in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, as one of his favourite actors. Robbie first played Harley in 2016’s Suicide Squad and reprised the role in Birds of Prey and Gunn’s film.
