The red wall facing its biggest threat in decades as Republicans scramble to defend Texas
Democrats believe Texas could be more competitive than usual, with state Representative James Talarico seeking to defeat Republican Ken Paxton in a closely watched Senate race. Talarico’s polling, fundraising and rally crowds have encouraged supporters, while Donald Trump’s appearances with Paxton underscore the national attention on the contest.
Talarico raised $64 million from July to September and more than $146 million since entering the race; Paxton raised $18 million in the same three-month period. However, Republican outside groups have spent more than $200 million supporting Paxton, and Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC has added $33.7 million in advertising. The campaign follows a divisive Republican primary in which Paxton defeated Senator John Cornyn, and voters at rallies expressed sharply different views of the candidates and the race.
In short
- Talarico is mounting a strong Democratic challenge in Texas.
- He raised $64 million in three months.
- Republican groups have spent heavily to support Paxton.
