Rockstar developer union could end up over 1,600 workers strong and encompass nearly all UK staff below senior management, IWGB claim
The Independent Workers of Great Britain says a successful recognition vote could bring more than 1,600 UK-based Rockstar Games workers into a union, making it the largest recognised union in the UK games sector. The proposed bargaining unit would cover nearly all staff below director level, giving workers a collective voice on workplace decisions.
Voting is scheduled to run from 12 to 26 November, around the planned launch of GTA 6 on 19 November. Rockstar has more than 4,700 employees across 12 locations worldwide, but the UK union would not include staff in other countries. Union organisers cite concerns including the gender pay gap, changing overtime policies and job security; a tribunal over the dismissal of 34 mostly UK-based staff is also due around the same period.
In short
- IWGB says the proposed union could cover more than 1,600 UK Rockstar workers.
- The vote runs from 12 to 26 November.
- Organisers cite pay, overtime and job security concerns.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A bargaining unit covering most UK staff below director level could give workers a stronger collective voice on pay, overtime, job security and workplace changes, especially where individual employees may have little influence. Supporters may see recognition as a way to address concerns such as the gender pay gap through formal negotiation, while keeping the union’s scope limited to UK staff.
The case against
Rockstar could argue that a bargaining unit spanning more than 1,600 employees across varied roles may make it harder to represent different teams’ needs and could add complexity to workplace decisions. The company may also favour addressing pay, overtime and job security through direct engagement with staff, and argue that recognition during a major game launch and an ongoing employment dispute risks adding strain at a demanding time.
Explained simply
Rockstar Games is the studio behind the Grand Theft Auto series. It employs staff in several countries, while the proposed union would cover UK-based workers below director level.
The Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) is the union seeking to represent those workers. If recognised, it could negotiate with Rockstar on workplace matters such as pay, overtime and job security.
The vote comes as the UK games industry has faced debates about working conditions and staff representation. A tribunal concerning the dismissal of 34 mostly UK-based Rockstar staff is also due around the same period.
