Jonah Kagen Talks the “Scary” Experience of Baring His Soul on His Sophomore LP, ‘Eternity of Anything’ (Exclusive)

American Songwriter ·

Jonah Kagen says making his second album, *Eternity of Anything*, was a more exposed and daunting experience than his debut. He wrote, produced and mixed it alone, turning inward to write about his hopes for love and repeated disappointments; he says the lack of collaborators left him with no “out” from criticism.

Kagen aimed to build on the sound of his first album, *Sunflowers and Leather*, with bolder production, including grooves, strings and horns, and said Bon Iver influenced his willingness to take risks. The LP includes the singles “Don’t Feel Right” and “Do Better”, a track sampling Fred Again that he says was cleared, and “Words From a Wandering Man”, which he calls his favourite song he has written.

In short

  • Kagen made his second album alone, making its release feel more exposing.
  • The songs explore longing for love and past disappointments.
  • The sound expands on his debut with bolder production choices.
