Parsons hat-trick as Irish seal South Africa series win

BBC Sport ·

Ireland beat South Africa in Cape Town to secure a historic Test series win, following up their victory the previous week with another six-try performance. Beibhinn Parsons scored a hat-trick as Ireland recovered from falling behind in the final 20 minutes to win the bruising encounter.

Captain Erin King and Aoife Dalton, who scored twice, also crossed for Ireland; Dannah O’Brien added four conversions. South Africa’s tries came from Unam Tose, Sizophila Solontsi and Vainah Ubisi, with Jakkie Cilliers converting once. Ireland became the first Irish side to win back-to-back Tests in South Africa, while Parsons took her international tally to 29 tries in 40 caps.

In short

  • Ireland sealed a historic Test series win in South Africa.
  • Beibhinn Parsons scored three tries.
  • Ireland won after trailing 19-14 with 20 minutes left.

Explained simply

Test rugby is played over 80 minutes, with teams scoring by grounding the ball over the opposition’s goal line for a try, worth five points. A conversion kick after a try can add two more points.

Ireland and South Africa are national teams in women’s rugby union, and a Test is an international match between countries. A series is a set of matches between the same teams; winning both Tests in South Africa was a first for an Irish side.

Beibhinn Parsons is an Ireland winger, while Erin King captains the team. A hat-trick means scoring three tries in one match, and Parsons’ growing international try tally provides context for her role in Ireland’s attack.
