BBC Sport ·

Marc Marquez won the Malaysian Grand Prix, extending his MotoGP championship lead to 44 points after title rival Jorge Martin withdrew with a fractured wrist. The victory puts Marquez in position to secure his seventh world title with two rounds still to come.

Marquez finished more than four seconds ahead and now has 399 points. He needs to extend his lead to 74 points at next week’s Qatar Grand Prix to clinch the championship there. Pedro Acosta took second and Marquez’s brother Alex was third; Martin, the 2024 champion, could not race after struggling with his wrist injury in practice.

In short

  • Marquez won in Malaysia and leads by 44 points.
  • He has 399 points with two rounds remaining.
  • Martin missed the race with a fractured wrist.

Explained simply

MotoGP is the top class of motorcycle road racing, with riders competing across a season for points towards the riders’ championship. Marc Marquez is a multiple-time champion, while Jorge Martin won the 2024 title and has been one of his main rivals.

Riders earn points according to where they finish each race, so a lead built over the season can matter as much as any single result. With two rounds left, the size of Marquez’s advantage affects how soon the championship can be decided and what Martin would need to do to stay in contention.
