Jakarta World Cinema Plans to Revive First Feature Competition With International Jury
Jakarta World Cinema plans to revive its First Feature Competition next year, opening it to filmmakers worldwide and appointing an international jury. The competition was suspended this year because organisers struggled to assemble an international panel; previously, its judges had all been Indonesian.
This year’s festival has a record 102 theatrical titles within a programme of 207 films, with organisers aiming to expand next year and increase capacity at CGV Grand Indonesia. Its short film competition received more than 300 entries, and 50 selected films will screen; the best short film will receive full funding from KlikFilm for a debut feature’s production and distribution. The festival is backed by a government and film-industry matching fund, and its programme will travel to Bandung and Malang after the Jakarta edition closes on 7 November.
In short
- First Feature Competition is planned to return next year.
- An international jury would open it to filmmakers worldwide.
- This year’s programme includes 207 films.
Explained simply
Jakarta World Cinema is a film festival held in Indonesia’s capital, showing films from Indonesia and around the world. Its programme includes feature-length and short films, and screenings also take place beyond Jakarta.
A first feature is a filmmaker’s first full-length film. Competitions for first features can give new directors a chance to show their work and gain support, while an international jury brings judges from more than one country.
The festival is supported by a fund that combines government and film-industry backing. Its short film competition also offers a route to further work: the winning filmmaker receives funding for the production and distribution of a first feature.
