Australia omit star pace trio for England series
Australia have rested Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from the upcoming white-ball series against England after the trio played in all three Tests against South Africa. The decision gives the veteran fast bowlers a break before a demanding run of Test cricket, while creating opportunities for less experienced players.
The ODI series begins in Perth on 13 November, followed by five T20 matches from 21 November to 2 December. Cummins and Hazlewood are absent from both formats; Starc, 36, has retired from T20 cricket. Mitchell Marsh will captain the ODIs in Cummins’s place, and 21-year-old Mahli Beardman is in both squads and could make his ODI debut. Australia’s Test schedule includes four home Tests against New Zealand, five in India and a one-off Ashes anniversary Test before the five-match Ashes series.
In short
- Australia have rested Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc for the England white-ball series.
- Mitchell Marsh will captain the ODI side.
- Young fast bowler Mahli Beardman could make his ODI debut.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Resting Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc after a demanding run of Tests could protect their fitness and extend their effectiveness for Australia’s packed Test schedule. It also gives younger players such as Mahli Beardman a chance to gain international experience and helps build depth before future campaigns.
The case against
Leaving out three leading fast bowlers weakens Australia’s white-ball squads for a high-profile series against England and may reduce the contest’s quality for players and supporters. Regular international matches also offer valuable preparation, so critics could argue that the selectors should have balanced workloads through rotation rather than resting all three.
