Explained simply
US midterm elections take place halfway through a president’s four-year term. Voters choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and a portion of the Senate; these elections can change which party controls Congress.
Congress passes federal laws and approves government spending, so its balance of power affects how much of a president’s agenda can advance. In 2026, Republicans hold narrow majorities and Democrats are seeking to win back one or both chambers.
CNN is a US television news network, and its election coverage is designed to explain results as votes are counted across the country. Its presenters and correspondents report from the states, while an on-screen results display helps viewers follow contests that could determine control of Congress.
