Sixteen-month-old dies in Collie house fire; cause remains unknown
A sixteen-month-old boy died in a house fire in Collie, south of Perth, after being found in his cot. Several other people inside the home escaped, and police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.
The fire began in a bedroom at about 2.30pm on Sunday, but its cause has not been established. The boy’s aunt said his mother was outside with two other children when the bedroom door and window combusted; emergency crews extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the house. Detectives will prepare a report for the coroner.
In short

- Other people in the home escaped safely.
- Police are investigating; the cause is unknown.
Explained simply
Collie is a town in Western Australia, about 200 kilometres south of Perth. In Australia, a coroner investigates deaths that are sudden, unexplained or occur in unusual circumstances, and may examine evidence to establish how they happened.
A coroner’s report can help clarify the circumstances of a death, including where a fire began and what may have caused it. Fire investigators and police may gather evidence for that process; a police finding that a death is not suspicious addresses whether a crime is suspected, not the fire’s cause.
