Sheffield MP claims green belt housing plans set to fail – The Star
Sheffield MP Clive Betts says the city’s proposed Local Plan, which includes building on green belt land, is unlikely to pass a council vote. He has urged the council to restart the process, arguing that continuing towards a vote could leave the city facing uncertainty over what happens next.
The plan proposes 3,529 homes across 14 green belt sites, including more than 1,600 in Handsworth. Labour and Green councillors hold 45 seats, but Betts says several may oppose the plan; 39 Lib Dem, Reform and independent councillors are also expected to vote against it. A vote has been postponed from July to September and may now be in doubt for the council’s 2 December meeting. Sheffield’s council leader says restarting the plan would mean higher housing targets, while the city has limited room to expand west because of the Peak District.
