Samsung’s Galaxy Ring gets FDA approval for advanced sleep apnea detection
Samsung says its Galaxy Ring can now identify a wider range of possible sleep apnoea patterns after the feature received FDA approval in July. The update matters because it may help users spot a possible reason for feeling tired despite a full night’s sleep and raise it with a healthcare professional.
The Health Monitor app uses AI to estimate breathing disruptions per hour and classify sleep apnoea as mild, occasional or frequent, provided users sleep at least five hours on two nights within ten days. The feature also works on the Galaxy Watch 9 running Wear OS 7.0 or later, with updates planned for the Galaxy Watch 7 and 8. Samsung says the devices cannot diagnose the condition; a physician must do that.
In short
- Galaxy Ring gains expanded, FDA-approved sleep apnoea detection.
- The app classifies disruption patterns after two nights of data.
- A doctor is still needed for diagnosis.
