Karoline Leavitt snaps back at troll after sharing photo of her midterms ballot
Karoline Leavitt responded sharply to an X user who assumed a photograph of her ballot showed she had voted by post. She said she had taken the picture at the polling booth in New Hampshire, where she voted in the midterm election; the exchange drew attention because she has previously criticised mail-in voting.
The 29-year-old posted a selfie with an “I Voted” sticker and an image showing votes for three Republicans: Kelly Ayotte for governor, John E Sununu for the US Senate and Anthony DiLorenzo for Congress. In a 2025 White House briefing, Leavitt alleged fraud in mail-in voting, and after posting her ballot she shared a Republican National Committee website for reporting potential election irregularities.
In short
- Leavitt said she photographed her ballot at the polling booth.
- An X user mistook it for a mail-in ballot.
- She has previously criticised mail-in voting.
Explained simply
US midterm elections take place halfway through a president’s four-year term. Voters choose members of Congress and, in some states, governors and other local officials.
Karoline Leavitt is the White House press secretary and a New Hampshire voter. The ballot choices shown in her photo were three Republican candidates in state and federal races.
Voting rules vary by state: people may vote in person or, where permitted, by post. Leavitt has previously criticised mail-in voting, and her comments about the method form part of wider US political debate over how elections are run.
