Proton Users Revolt After CEO Calls Security Caution ‘Loser Thinking’ Amid AI Push
Proton customers have reacted angrily after CEO Andy Yen reportedly dismissed a request for extra security testing as “loser thinking” while urging staff to adopt AI coding tools. The dispute has raised questions about whether the privacy company’s push for faster development could affect the trust central to its services.
According to reporting based on nine current and former employees, internal messages and meeting recordings, Yen made the remarks in August and said he would reinterview staff about their AI use. Proton later cancelled those planned assessments. A user proposal calling for Yen to resign had received 2,020 votes when reviewed, while some users reported cancelling or not renewing subscriptions; these posts do not establish how many customers actually left. On 1 November, technology chief Bart Butler published a manifesto advocating a major AI and automation overhaul while saying engineers must retain expertise, testing and accountability.
