Democrats aim to sweep most US governor elections after wins in key states
Democrats won governorships in several states that have recently favoured Republicans, including Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin. The results mark a major shift in state politics and could influence the remainder of Donald Trump’s second term and the 2028 presidential race.
Gina Hinojosa became Texas’s first Latina governor and the first Democrat elected to the office in 30 years. Georgia’s Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a US state; Ohio’s Amy Acton became its first woman governor, while Wisconsin’s David Crowley became the state’s first Black governor. With some votes still uncounted in Arizona and Alaska, Democratic candidates were leading; Republicans also won in Florida, South Carolina and Alabama.
In short
- Democrats flipped several Republican-leaning state governorships.
- Gina Hinojosa became Texas’s first Latina governor.
- Georgia elected the first Black woman governor in the US.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Democrats can argue that these victories show voters in traditionally Republican states want a change in leadership and policies, and that more diverse governors better reflect their states. They may also see the results as a mandate to check the president’s agenda and strengthen their party ahead of 2028.
The case against
Republicans can argue that results in individual state races do not necessarily signal a lasting national shift or a mandate to obstruct the president, especially with votes still being counted in some states. They may contend that voters chose candidates for local reasons and that Republican wins elsewhere show continued support for their party’s policies.
Explained simply
US states elect their own governors, who lead state governments and have powers over areas such as budgets, public services and the way elections are run. Governors serve alongside state legislatures, while the president leads the federal government; state and federal authorities have separate responsibilities.
The two main US political parties are the Democrats and Republicans. Control of governorships can affect how state policies are carried out and how parties organise and campaign, including ahead of presidential elections. State results are one part of US politics, alongside elections for Congress and the presidency.
