India news: Election body opens door for voter reinclusion
India’s election body has said voters removed from the rolls can apply to re-enrol using Form 6 without facing action. The decision opens a route back onto the electoral register for deleted voters and is the main headline in a roundup of news from India.
The roundup also reports that the government approved 14,500 crore rupees ($1.73 billion) to support 92 GWh of grid-scale energy storage between 2026-27 and 2030-31. Cyclone Murasu left at least two people dead in Andhra Pradesh, displaced more than 12,000 people to shelters and damaged crops, homes and electricity infrastructure. Separately, a report said India may offer Agniveers a voluntary two-year service extension as the first group approaches the end of its four-year terms.
In short
- Deleted voters may reapply using Form 6 without penalty.
- India approved funding for 92 GWh of energy storage.
- Cyclone Murasu caused deaths and widespread damage in Andhra Pradesh.
Explained simply
India’s electoral rolls are official lists of people who can vote. The Election Commission of India oversees these lists, which are updated to add eligible voters and remove entries when people are no longer entitled to be registered or their details cannot be confirmed.
Form 6 is the application used to register as a voter. Allowing people whose names were deleted to apply again without facing action gives them a route to seek reinstatement, though they still need to meet the registration requirements. The issue matters because being on the electoral roll is necessary to vote in Indian elections.
