Abdul El-Sayed Wins in Michigan
Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s US Senate seat, defeating Trump-endorsed Republican Mike Rogers after campaigning on a progressive platform that included “Medicare for All”. His victory is a test of whether a less-established progressive can prevail in a competitive state, despite opposition from senior Democrats and millions in outside spending.
El-Sayed narrowly won the August Democratic primary against Haley Stevens, whose campaign received more than $30 million from groups allied with AIPAC. In the general election, he faced Islamophobic remarks, attacks over his criticism of Israel, and Stevens’s late decision to withdraw her endorsement and back Rogers. El-Sayed, a physician and epidemiologist, will become the first Muslim US senator in January.
In short
- Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race.
- His campaign centred on a progressive platform including “Medicare for All”.
- He will be the first Muslim US senator.
Explained simply
Michigan is one of the states whose voters help decide control of the US Senate, where each state elects two senators. Senators vote on federal laws and confirm senior government appointments, so a close race there can have national consequences.
Abdul El-Sayed is a physician and public health researcher who entered politics as a progressive Democrat. He challenged more established Democrats for his party’s nomination, including Haley Stevens, before facing Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.
The contest drew attention to disagreements within the Democratic Party over healthcare, campaign spending and US policy towards Israel. El-Sayed’s election will also make him the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate.
