Grandmother dies after rescue attempt in Menorca as son questions beach safety
Teresa Ford, 69, died after entering the sea at Cavalleria Beach in Menorca to help her family when her 10-year-old granddaughter’s inflatable overturned in strong currents. Her son Andy says the death may have been preventable and has asked the local council why there were no lifeguards or visible warnings about the conditions.
In a letter to Es Mercadal’s mayor, Ford asked what the council knew about the currents, the forecast winds and the end of seasonal lifeguard cover. His wife and daughter were rescued by a passer-by using a rope; his father John survived with injuries after being swept towards rocks. Ford says his daughter blames herself and that the family has not received a response from the authorities.
