Kathryn Hunter discusses family trauma and surviving a suicide attempt
Kathryn Hunter is preparing to star in a stage adaptation of *Eurotrash*, a story about a mother and son confronting family and European history. Its themes of concealed pasts have led Hunter to reflect on her own family, her partner Marcello Magni’s death and the importance of speaking openly about trauma.
Hunter, 69, says she attempted suicide at 23 while studying at Rada, suffering serious injuries to her back, pelvis, arm and foot. Four years ago, she publicly corrected reports that the injuries came from a car accident, hoping to encourage people experiencing suicidal feelings to seek help and to show that such feelings can be overcome. She also describes how Magni supported her through periods of depression by listening and being present.
In short
- Hunter’s new play explores family secrets and Europe’s past.
- She has spoken publicly about a suicide attempt at 23.
- She hopes openness will encourage people in distress to reach out.
