Democrats win governorships in Texas and other GOP-controlled states in rebuke to Republicans
Democrats won governorships in Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Ohio, turning voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and Republican policies into a broad rebuke of the GOP. The victories give Democrats a majority of US governorships for the first time in two decades and could strengthen state-level resistance to Trump’s second-term agenda.
Keisha Lance Bottoms’ win in Georgia makes her the first Black woman elected governor in the United States. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott despite being heavily outspent on advertising; Democrats also defeated Republican candidates in Iowa and Ohio. Thirty-six states held gubernatorial elections, and Democrats are set to hold at least 27 of the 50 governorships in 2027.
In short
- Democrats regain a majority of US governorships.
- Gina Hinojosa unseats Greg Abbott in Texas.
- Keisha Lance Bottoms makes history in Georgia.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Democrats can argue that the results show voters want a change in direction after weighing Trump’s agenda and Republican policies, and that state governments should provide a check where those policies lack support. The wins also give Democratic governors a stronger role in shaping state priorities and defending local interests.
The case against
Republicans can argue that gubernatorial results reflect state-specific concerns and candidate choices, so they should not be treated as a clear verdict on the national agenda. They may also contend that state-level resistance could obstruct policies voters supported nationally, and that cooperation between state and federal governments would better serve residents.
Explained simply
US governors lead state governments and work with state legislatures on issues such as education, transport and public safety. They can also challenge federal policies in court or choose how their state applies them, though they cannot overturn federal law.
The Republican Party, or GOP, controls the federal government under President Donald Trump, while states have their own elected leaders and powers. A governor’s party can shape how a state responds to national policies, but state legislatures and courts also affect what a governor can do.
Georgia, Texas, Iowa and Ohio are among the states where Republicans have held the governorship. The election of Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia is also a historic milestone: she is the first Black woman elected governor in the United States.
