Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old Democratic Socialist, has won New York’s 13th Congressional District, covering Harlem and the Bronx, by a wide margin. Her election adds to a leftward shift in New York City politics and makes her one of the most prominent socialists entering Congress.

Chevalier received 87.5 per cent of the vote, compared with Republican challenger Jomo Williams’s 11.4 per cent. She has previously advocated abolishing police, prisons and border enforcement, and argued that deporting migrants convicted of crimes in the United States is unconstitutional; she has since sought to qualify some past positions. She also faced criticism for deleted social media posts, including remarks about interracial relationships and white women.
