Casey, Jansen and Timoney start against Argentina
Ireland have named Craig Casey, Nick Timoney and Sean Jansen to start against Argentina in Dublin on Friday, with Jamison Gibson-Park and Josh van der Flier among the replacements. The selections give Casey and Timoney unexpected starting roles, while Jansen is set to cover at number eight with captain Caelan Doris and Jack Conan injured.
Sam Prendergast returns at fly-half, and Dan Sheehan captains the side. Ireland also bring back Mack Hansen, Andrew Porter and Ryan Baird after injury absences; Tadhg Furlong is available following disciplinary clearance. Argentina have made 12 changes from the team that drew 28-28 with Australia in September, and full-back Juan Cruz Mallia returns from injury.
In short
- Casey and Timoney earn unexpected starts against Argentina.
- Sheehan captains Ireland with Doris injured.
- Argentina make 12 changes from their draw with Australia.
Explained simply
Ireland and Argentina are the national teams of two countries with long histories in rugby union. Ireland play their home matches in Dublin, while Argentina are known as the Pumas. Their meetings are part of the international rugby calendar, when teams test themselves against opponents from other countries.
A rugby team has 15 players on the pitch, with different roles in the forwards and backs. The number eight is a forward who helps win and carry the ball, while the fly-half often directs attacking play; replacements can come on during a match. Injuries can affect which players are available and how a team covers each role.
International matches matter because they contribute to teams’ experience and standing in the sport, and give coaches a chance to assess players. Changes to a line-up can reflect injuries, fitness and decisions about how to approach an opponent.
