WoW: Forever’s massive pre-launch balance patch breaks from the chains Classic power, increasing ‘the health of higher level creatures to compensate’
WoW: Forever has received a major pre-launch balance update, with developers raising class damage and increasing the health of higher-level creatures to compensate. They say sticking closely to original Classic power limits constrained new abilities and left some iconic skills feeling weak, so the changes give them more room to make combat engaging while retaining the game’s distinct class identities.
The patch also increases tank threat generation to offset the removal of Blessing of Salvation: Warrior Defensive Stance now grants an 80% threat increase, up from 30%, while Druid Bear Form rises to 115%, from 50%. Rogues gain Shank, an off-hand weapon ability with different effects for Combat, Subtlety and Assassination. Developers say they do not expect major tuning changes before raids open next month, but plan a larger review after more players progress beyond level 30.
In short
- Developers raise class damage and higher-level creature health.
- Tank threat buffs compensate for removing Blessing of Salvation.
- A larger balance review is planned after more players pass level 30.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Raising damage and creature health together could give developers room to make new abilities feel impactful without making combat trivially easy. The changes also let iconic skills and distinct class roles matter more, while stronger tank threat may help groups adapt to the loss of Blessing of Salvation.
The case against
Changing damage and creature health before launch risks upsetting the familiar feel and balance that draws players to Classic-style play. With raids approaching and many players not yet past level 30, the developers may have limited evidence about how the changes affect class balance, encounter difficulty and group play.
